Why reviewers disagree
These are two of the best color laser all-in-ones for a home office, and the big labs split on them. PCMag names the Brother MFC-L3780CDW its best mainstream color laser and an Editors’ Choice. RTINGS ranks Canon’s newer Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw slightly ahead and calls it one of the best document printers it has tested.
It isn’t quite a head-to-head disagreement. PCMag reviewed the Brother in late 2023 and hasn’t reviewed the Canon, which launched in September 2025. RTINGS tested both on the same bench and called it close, giving the Canon a slight edge for speed over Wi-Fi, page yields with standard cartridges, and its larger display. The labs also test differently: RTINGS prints over Wi-Fi, where it found the Brother slows down, while PCMag tests over Ethernet.

|---|---|---|
| List price (October 2026) | $569.99 | $549.99 |
| Rated speed | 31 ppm | 26 ppm |
| Document feeder | 50 sheets, single-pass two-sided | 50 sheets, single-pass two-sided |
| Paper input | 250-sheet tray + 30-sheet multipurpose tray | 250-sheet tray + 1-sheet manual slot |
| Touchscreen | 3.5 in | 5 in |
| Wi-Fi | Dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz) | 2.4 GHz only |
| Warranty | 1 year | 3 years |
| Starter toner | 2,300 black / 1,200 color pages | 700 black / 500 color pages |
Both print, scan, copy and fax, both scan both sides of a page in one pass, and both have Ethernet and USB. RTINGS rates scan quality outstanding on both.
Toner costs
Using each maker’s largest cartridges at October 2026 list prices and rated yields:
| Brother (TN229XXL) | Canon (075H) | |
|---|---|---|
| Black page, toner only | about 2.9¢ | about 3.6¢ |
| Color page, toner only | about 15.0¢ | about 19.7¢ |
| Black page with drum and parts | about 4.2¢ | about 3.6¢ (drum built into cartridges) |
| Color page with drum and parts | about 16.3¢ | about 19.7¢ |
The Brother is cheaper per page mainly because it offers extra-large XXL cartridges, which Canon doesn’t. Its separate drum, transfer belt and waste-toner box add about 1.3¢ a page over their long lives, which makes black pages slightly cheaper on the Canon once parts are counted. For color, the Brother stays ahead. The Brother also ships with much more starter toner, so you’ll buy your first cartridges later. Note that Canon’s high-yield 075H cartridges showed as backordered at Canon in October 2026.
Print quality
Both are excellent document printers. PCMag found the Brother’s text readable down to 4 points with accurate color in charts. RTINGS called the Brother’s documents fantastic and the Canon’s very sharp. Neither is a photo printer: RTINGS found the Canon’s photos flat with a narrow color range, and PCMag rates the Brother’s photos as fine for brochures.
Paper handling and setup
The Brother’s 30-sheet multipurpose tray is a real advantage if you print envelopes, labels or card stock in batches; the Canon has a single-sheet slot. The Canon’s 5-inch tilting touchscreen is easier to use, and its three-year warranty beats the Brother’s one year. Both are heavy, nearly 48 pounds, so plan where they’ll live.
Which should you buy?
Buy the Brother MFC-L3780CDW if you print a lot of color, want lower toner costs and more starter toner, or need the multipurpose tray. Buy the Canon MF665Cdw if you mostly print and scan documents, value the bigger screen and longer warranty, and can find it on sale: it has sold for well under its list price.
