01Best mono laser

Brother HL-L2460DW

Brother HL-L2460DW

A compact print-only mono laser with auto duplex, dual-band Wi-Fi and Ethernet that never clogs, no matter how long it sits.

If you mostly print black text and want a printer you can ignore for months, this is the one to beat. RTINGS names it the best budget laser and the best budget black-and-white printer, and it has everything most homes need: automatic two-sided printing, dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB. Like every laser, it doesn't clog, so it's ready after weeks unused.

Its weak spot is quality out of the box. PCMag found business text perfectly readable but saw banding in graphics, and RTINGS says a few settings changes improve the defaults. Buy the XL toner: at Brother's October 2026 prices, a page costs about 4¢ with XL toner and the separate drum, versus about 6¢ with the standard cartridge.

Good for

  • Auto duplex plus Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Ethernet and USB, the best-connected of Brother's HL-L24xx print-only models
  • Printed 37 pages per minute after the first page in PCMag's test, beating its 36 ppm rating
  • Ready to print after weeks unused, with no clogging (RTINGS)

Consider

  • Default print quality is below Brother's norm: PCMag saw banding in graphics, and RTINGS says settings need adjusting
  • About 4¢ a page with XL toner and the separate drum at Brother's October 2026 prices; standard toner costs more

02Best mono all-in-one

Brother MFC-L2820DW

Brother MFC-L2820DW

A black-and-white laser all-in-one that adds a 50-sheet document feeder, flatbed, fax and touchscreen to the same cheap supplies as the HL-L2460DW.

Add a scanner, copier, fax and a 50-sheet document feeder to the HL-L2460DW and you get the MFC-L2820DW. RTINGS ranks it the best black-and-white printer overall, and it uses the same toner and drum, so running costs are identical.

The catch is the feeder: it scans one side at a time, so two-sided originals mean flipping pages on the glass. If you scan stacks of double-sided paperwork, the MFC-L2900DW (PCMag's top mono pick) adds a single-pass duplex feeder for about $50 more.

Good for

  • RTINGS' pick for best black-and-white printer and best mid-range laser
  • 50-sheet document feeder, flatbed scanner, fax and a 2.7-inch color touchscreen
  • Uses the same TN830 toner and DR830 drum as Brother's print-only HL-L2460DW

Consider

  • The document feeder scans one side only, so two-sided originals mean flipping pages
  • PCMag rated it 3.5; the MFC-L2900DW adds a single-pass duplex feeder for about $50 more

03Best color laser

Brother HL-L3295CDW

Brother HL-L3295CDW

A print-only color LED laser with crisp text, low color costs with XXL toner, and generous starter cartridges.

Color lasers usually cost a lot per color page. The HL-L3295CDW is the exception when you buy its XXL toner: PCMag measured 12.9¢ a color page at 2024 prices, and it's about 15¢ at Brother's current prices, still low for the class. PCMag calls it the best budget color laser, with text readable down to 4 points and charts good enough for handouts.

It's print-only and slows to roughly half speed for two-sided pages, but the near-full starter toner (2,300 black and 1,200 per color pages) means you won't buy supplies for a long time.

Good for

  • PCMag's best budget color laser and an Editors' Choice (4.5)
  • About 15¢ per color page with XXL toner at Brother's October 2026 prices, low for a color laser
  • Ships with near-full starter toner: 2,300 black and 1,200 per color

Consider

  • Print only: no scanner or copier
  • Two-sided printing drops to about half speed (13 ppm in PCMag's test)

04Best color laser all-in-one

Brother MFC-L3780CDW

Brother MFC-L3780CDW

A color LED laser all-in-one with a single-pass duplex document feeder, near top-tier text, and the lowest color costs in its class with XXL toner.

For a home office that scans and copies in color, the MFC-L3780CDW is PCMag's best mainstream color laser. Its 50-sheet document feeder scans both sides of a page in one pass, text is near top tier, and it shares the HL-L3295CDW's low-cost XXL toner.

RTINGS sees it as a close call against Canon's newer Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw, which it ranks slightly ahead for Wi-Fi speed and a bigger touchscreen. We compare the two in detail in [Brother MFC-L3780CDW vs Canon MF665Cdw](/comparisons/brother-mfc-l3780cdw-vs-canon-mf665cdw).

Good for

  • PCMag's best mainstream color laser and an Editors' Choice (4.5)
  • 50-sheet single-pass duplex document feeder that scans both sides at once
  • XXL toner options keep color pages around 15¢ at Brother's October 2026 prices

Consider

  • The 30-sheet multipurpose tray is small for batches of envelopes or labels
  • RTINGS says it's slow to warm up and slower over Wi-Fi, and ranks Canon's MF665Cdw slightly ahead

05Budget pick

HP LaserJet M209dw

HP LaserJet M209dw

A small, inexpensive mono laser with sharp text, auto duplex and full connectivity, as long as you're happy buying HP toner.

HP's small mono laser produces better text than the Brother HL-L2460DW in PCMag's testing, has the same duplex and networking, and often sells for less. The drum is built into the cartridge, so there's only one part to replace.

The reason it isn't our top pick is lock-in. HP's Dynamic Security blocks toner cartridges without an HP chip, and HP's own product page warns that firmware updates may block cartridges that used to work. Pages also cost a little more, about 4.4¢ with HP's high-yield 134X cartridge, and the 150-sheet tray is smaller. Buy it if you're happy to stick with HP toner.

Good for

  • PCMag rates its text close to top tier for a mono laser, and better than the Brother HL-L2460DW's
  • Auto duplex, dual-band Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB at a low price
  • The drum is built into the toner cartridge, so there's no separate part to buy

Consider

  • HP's Dynamic Security blocks cartridges without an HP chip, and HP says updates may block cartridges that used to work
  • About 4.4¢ a page with HP's 134X cartridge, and a 150-sheet tray with no manual feed slot

How to choose

What you print

Mostly black text suits a mono laser. Color documents and the occasional photo suit an ink tank or inkjet.

Running costs

Compare cost per page rather than cartridge prices. Ink tanks and lasers cost more upfront and far less over time.

Ink and account terms

Check whether the printer blocks third-party ink or toner, or requires an account or subscription to work.

How we chose

We started from the lasers that independent labs rate highest, mainly PCMag and RTINGS, then checked each one against the things that decide what it costs to own: current toner and drum prices, rated page yields, and whether the printer locks you into the maker’s toner. Prices and stock were checked on October 12, 2026. We haven’t tested these printers ourselves; see how we score for how we weigh the evidence.

Mono or color?

A mono laser is the cheapest, most reliable way to print black text. Toner doesn’t dry out and lasers don’t run cleaning cycles, so a printer that sits for a month prints the first page as cleanly as the last. If you print documents, forms and boarding passes, start here.

A color laser makes sense if you print color documents often, such as charts, flyers or homework, and want the same set-and-forget reliability. Color toner costs far more per page than an ink-tank printer’s ink, so if you print lots of color or any photos, an ink-tank printer is usually cheaper. Our ink tank or laser comparison goes through the trade-offs.

What a page really costs

Laser running costs are easy to underestimate because the printer comes with a short starter cartridge and Brother sells the drum separately. Here’s the math at the makers’ list prices in October 2026, using rated ISO yields:

Printer Supplies Black page Color page
Brother HL-L2460DW, MFC-L2820DW TN830XL twin pack + DR830 drum about 4.0¢ —
HP LaserJet M209dw 134X cartridge (drum built in) about 4.4¢ —
Brother HL-L3295CDW, MFC-L3780CDW TN229XXL toner + drum, belt and waste box about 4.2¢ about 16.3¢

Toner prices have risen since the labs measured these printers, so our figures run higher than PCMag’s (about 3.3¢ for the HL-L2460DW with its drum). Compatible toner is cheaper still, with some risk, which brings us to lock-in.

Third-party toner

Brother says its firmware updates don’t block third-party toner, and we found no documented block on these Brother models. HP is explicit in the other direction: the LaserJet M209dw is designed to work only with cartridges that have an HP chip, and HP says firmware updates may block cartridges that previously worked. If cheap compatible toner matters to you, choose the Brother.

Also consider

  • Brother MFC-L2900DW: the MFC-L2820DW with a single-pass duplex document feeder and a bigger touchscreen. PCMag’s top mono laser pick.
  • Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw: RTINGS’ favorite color laser all-in-one, with a three-year warranty. See our comparison with the MFC-L3780CDW.
  • Canon imageCLASS LBP6030w: RTINGS’ cheapest pick, often under $100, but slow, without two-sided printing, and with faint text.
  • Brother HL-L2405W: the HL-L2460DW without automatic two-sided printing or Ethernet, for about $40 less.
